When the Russian-built MiG-15 appeared in the skies over Korea, its excellent performance caught the US military off guard. With its swept-wing design, the MiG-15 was clearly superior to the US Air Force’s F-80 Shooting Star and F-84 Thunderjet in the air-to-air combat. Both of these American fighters had conventional straight wings and were relegated primarily to the fighter-bomber role. To counter the threat posed by the MiG-15, the Air Force turned to its newest and best fighter, the F-86 Sabre. Flying the sleek Sabre, with its swept wings and six 50-caliber marchine guns, Air Force pilots began to challenge the communist fighter in MiG Alley, and both the F-86 and its pilots proved to be superior as they ranup a 12-to-1 kill ration over the MiG-15.
